Law School Glossary

AHANA Pre-Law Association - (African-American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American) A minority organization that sponsors events through your school, such as seminars, career fairs, and guest lectures.

The Bar - American Bar Association (ABA), a professional association that provides information about the law, and is something that once your are an attorney you join in order to practice.  Each state contains its own bar association (www.abanet.org/about/home.htmlI).

Buckley Amendment Waiver - A waiver you are asked to sign when filling out a recommendation form.  If you sign the form, you are choosing to waive your right to view the completed recommendation.  The only people able to see the letter would be the admission council.

Catalyst - A nonprofit organization whose main objective is to advance women in all professions (www.catalystwomen.org).

EEOC - Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, a government agency that regulates federal equal employment opportunities, practices, and policies.  (www.eeoc.gov).

FAFSA - Free Application for Student Aid- A program run by the U.S. Department of Education, which offers a variety of student financial aid programs (www.fafsa.ed.gov/index.htm).

LSAC - Law School Admission Council, a corporation whose members consist of 201 law schools in the United States and Canada.  LSAC was founded in order to organize the law school admission process and provide services for those interested in a legal education (www.LSAC.org).

LSAT - Law School Admission Test, a test created by the Law School Admission Council, consisting of 101 multiple-choice questions.  The LSAT is composed of five 35-minute sections, one of which is experimental, and a writing sample.  It is required for students who are applying to law school.  

LSDAS - Law School Data Assembly Service, a part of the LSAC Corporation (who also administers the LSAT).  Most schools require the use of this service, for it summarizes an applicant’s academic performance and personal information into a single report.  Your report is sent to each school you apply to.

Mock Trial - An organization that allows students to learn court procedures through simulated trials.  Students are able to participate in regional and national competitions.

Pre-Law Review - A student-run publication that offers students an opportunity  to write and publish articles about current issues in the legal profession.

Pre-Law Society - An organization that sponsors events through your school, such as seminars, career fairs, and guest lectures.
