Pre Law Checklist1

The following checklist is available for pre-law candidates and is arranged chronologically by college class and presumes law school entrance in the fall following college graduation.
 
Freshman
  • Register with the Pre-Law Advising Office and attend pre-law information sessions
  • When choosing classes explore all interests
  • Check out pre-law student organizations at your school
  • Consider law-related summer internships or volunteer work
  • Commit yourself to learning about the legal profession and law school
  • Begin building a record of academic achievement
Sophomore
  • Choose a major that both intrigues you and motivates you to excel
  • Make efforts to actively participate in class and attend professors’ office hours, so that professors know you and your work and can serve as recommenders in the future
  • Think about summer jobs/internships and study abroad programs that expand your knowledge
  • Take a look at past LSATs and the LSAT registration booklet. Set up a tentative plan for when you would like to take the test and how you will prepare (Allow yourself 4-6 months to prepare for the LSAT)
Junior
  • Research programmatic, lifestyle, and financial aid issues of law schools you are interested in attending
  • Attend any law school forums held by your school or in the area
  • Continue studying for the LSAT
  • Finalize plans by registering for the LSAT
  • Register for the LSDAS
  • Have an official transcript sent to LSDAS from every college attended
  • Start narrowing down schools you would like to attend
  • Send away for catalogs in August from a wide range of schools
Senior
  • If you haven’t already registered for and taken the LSAT do so ASAP
  • Make arrangements and check with professors/ employers for the status of your recommendations
  • Double check your LSDAS report
  • If you are applying for early decision, your application should be ready for mailing
  • Attend law school forums in your area and ask any last minute questions to admission representatives
  • Send applications to the law schools by December 1st
  • Check with law schools to see if you application is complete
  • Complete FAFSA and other pertinent financial aid applications if necessary
  • As your decisions come in, meet with your pre-law advisor to discuss your options. Make timely decisions on acceptances, wait-lists, financial aid, and deposits
  • Send a final transcript to the law school you have decided to attend
